It was a dark and stormy night when Samuel Johnson rode into town, along with “The Man Known as Q," advising writers to murder their darlings.
But it’s not so easy to hold those darlings down. You’ll find a bunch of them kicking up their heels again on this site.
I’m delighted at the variety of pieces that some of my favorite writers have sent in, culled from their dead files -- and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Why should we strike out passages that we think are “particularly fine”? Why does the advice resonate immediately with queasy Aha! -- why do we reluctantly carve those pieces away, sometimes whole characters too? And are we better off without them, really?
I hope you’ll check out the hi-jinx Dr. Johnson’s Corner and get back to me.
